A culture shock of design

Designed by a global creative agency Sid Lee, West of Toronto is a juxtaposition of city biophilia, man-made urban grid and brutalist architecture. The contrast begins with the exterior, where the brutalist facade has been transformed by warm LED lighting that illuminates the night sky, including a glowing, opaque orange elevator to take guests to the rooftop bar and restaurant. The journey begins on the 6th floor, where the Reception desk and Living room (the W brand’s signature lobby/lounge) flows in shades of ruby, amethyst, and topaz — with curved lines and velvet furnishings reminiscent of from Toronto counterculture movement of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Other highlights of the 5,000-square-foot space include a communal foyer, a circular destination bar with cascading amber lighting, and the access to The courtyardan outdoor terrace surrounded by a three-story atrium of guest room windows – creating a voyeuristic tension between the public and the private.

West of Toronto has 254 rooms – including 30 suites – including two Extreme Wow (presidential) suites. Inspired by from Toronto an illustrious theater district, the bedroom beds are flanked by stage-inspired pendant lights and set in front of a sapphire velvet curtain that can be opened or closed automatically. Design touches include curved banquettes, dressing-style vanity mirrors, “record type” tables in honor of from Toronto musical heritage and nods to nature, such as abstract floral wallpaper and mushroom-shaped accent lights. As a playful nod to personal artistic interpretation, Queen Double Rooms are adorned with wall art that reads “Not everything has to mean something. Some things are right.by Canadian writer and musician Charles of Lin.

The journey continues with three murals by Dutch-born artist Mikael B. At the aisle level is “Below the Surface,” a fascinating interpretation of underwater volcanic eruptions; “Hidden Gem” – located on level G of the elevator – inspired by Salvador Dalí, Jackson Pollock and Peter Saul with a palette of colors and geometric shapes; and “Clear vision,” an abstract experimentation with color in meeting and event space.
