Scarecrow Convention brings scares to downtown Wiggins

Wiggins, Miss. (WLOX) – The town of Wiggins is a bit scared for the fall with friendly competition.

The ‘scarecrow convention’ has been going on for about 10 years and the spooky sights that welcome people to the city are nothing to be feared.

They are something to embrace – at least in Wiggins.

“It’s just a fun thing to do,” said Betsy Rowell, Stone County Economic Development Partnership, co-sponsor of the event. “We usually talk about this as a scarecrow convention – that scarecrows come to Wiggins and there are great things and fun things with the shops and kind of make it a story that scarecrows visit here and they are here all month for the convention.”

And it is getting bigger and more popular every year.

This year, nearly 4,000 votes were cast for nearly 60 scarecrows across the city. A variety of awards were presented this year in three different categories. “Miss Clawdia”, the product of Animal Care Clinic, won first place in People’s Choice.

“We’re having a great time. We’re having fun doing this,” said Virginia Wick of the Animal Care Clinic. “We’re having fun coming up with the ideas behind this, how to put it all together.”

The display took about three days to assemble, so it’s too much work to take it down right away.

“We’re keeping it going for as long as we can,” Wick said. “We’ll usually keep it after Christmas, as long as it holds up and we decorate it for Christmas, we’ll put Christmas hats on it.”

That’s if Miss Clawdia will tolerate the attention.

The EDP partners with the Pine Hill Ladies to organize the competition.
