Farmers at the Mecca Grade Estate Malt Tasting Room invite locals to come and taste their specialty beers
Want to taste the local flavors fresh out of the barrel?
Mecca Grade Estate Malt, a malt house on the estate north of Madras, has opened a tasting and tap room.
âOur malt house creates specialty malts and grains, all grown and malted on our farm, which breweries and distilleries can use in their creations,â said Katie Ralls of Mecca Grade Estate Malt. âWe have also just expanded our brewery and opened our tasting room to the public so that everyone can enjoy and taste beers that showcase our malts.
Brad Klann owns the family farm on Northwest Columbia Drive and operates with the help of his son-in-law, Travis Ralls, and his family. Brad and his son, Seth Klann, own and operate the malt house. Their family has farmed in Jefferson County for over 100 years.
The Mecca Grade Estate Malt Tasting Room debuted in May and is open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Malt, grains and goods are available for purchase during all opening hours.
âWe offer tasting flights, pints, growler fillers and take out cans,â Ralls said. “We also offer the sale of barrels and brewing for public and private events.”
Currently on draft, Lionshead Pils, brewed with smoked pilsner malt, filtered through a bed of Kentucky bluegrass straw and bitter with a little addition of Czech Saaz hops. Lionshead malt comes from a batch of Pelton that was smoked in the summer 2020 wildfire.
âWe just used Campo Santo, a 10.2% ABV Imperial Stout that’s rich and roasted, chocolatey and served on nitro,â said Ralls.
Into the Metaverse is made with malted barley, Shaniko malted white wheat, and flaked and hopped with Citra and Galaxy. Visitors can also taste the Hyperion Impact IPA featuring Gateway Aeolian Malt, Alvarado Red Wheat Malt and Oatmeal. Bourbon-Barrel Aged Bravemaker has a rich caramel raisin character.
âWe have been opening our tasting / faucet room for several months, but we would like more local traffic,â Ralls said.
Mecca Grade is located on 1,000 irrigated acres. Farmers only grow one variety of two-row spring barley, Full Pint, which was bred by Oregon State University.
âMuch like a winery and winery, our eighth generation Oregon farming family grows and malts all of our own specialty grains,â the farmers say. “Our estate malt made with Full Pint has a very unique nutty and graham cracker sweetness that is attributable to our farming practices, our malting process and, yes, even the terroir.”
