To learn more about Magic City Disco, we chatted with Standard of Jena-a longtime Birmingham resident and a member of the local nightclub team. When not having fun with ABBA and the Bee Gees, Jena can be found practicing real estate and helping clients find their dream home in Birmingham with LAH Real Estate.

How did you get started with Magic City Disco?

Jena: “I’ve always been a disco fan! One year, I started seeing advertisements for the “Ultimate Disco Cruise” and convinced my husband to go for my birthday. Subsequently, I contacted Magic City Disco – called Disco Amigos at the time – and decided to come and train.

What is the process for joining Magic City Disco?

Jena: “After I signed up for training, I danced with them for about eight weeks. Then they gave me the opportunity to join — and of course I joined right away! They have two different ways for disco enthusiasts to get involved: first as a full performer, and second as a member of the “cast” that supports us.

Now, out of the blue, my husband suddenly has disco fever! He is a member of The Men’s Den and learns all the moves.

What events does Magic City Disco usually occur at?

Jena: “Obviously last year was not a typical year for us. Normally we would be involved in several parades and events in the South. For example, we participated in three different Mardi Gras parades a year. We also support many fundraisers, such as the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease. This year we were able to support Pride Night at Birmingham Baron’s.

We even performed several times at the Club, on the very stage that inspired ‘Saturday Night Fever’!

What kind of people make up Magic City Disco?

Jena: “We are a very diverse group of people from all walks of life brought together by our love of disco. We have members in their 20s and members in their 70s! When I arrived I was the first real estate agent on the team, but now there are four of us.

I am ready to move to Funkytown! How can I register?

Jena: “The first thing to know is that disco is not as easy as you think. We practice every week and all of our performers are very dedicated, this is not a social club.

Usually we have a recruiting season in April and May. Then our new season starts in June. Prospective members must attend at least three practices so that we know they are serious about membership. After that, new members will spend the first year as a cast member. Then you can audition to become a full-fledged performer!
