(Lander, WY) – Husband and wife duo Joe and Angie Hammer, along with their young chef-in-training, Jackson, started Prairie Fire Catering just over a month ago and their plates are filling up quickly this summer.
Not only do they host private events like weddings and parties, but you can also find them at community events like Lander Presents and the Farmer’s Market.
Joe, a professional chef, and Angie, a certified level two sommelier, have decades of varied experience in the restaurant industry working in Philadelphia and Lander.
Both serve fresh dishes prepared from custom menus to suit the tastes, styles and budgets of their customers. If feeding a large gathering isn’t part of your plan, they also have smaller-scale event options like home dinners, cooking classes, wine dinners, and cocktails.
Catering is something they have been discussing for quite some time and shared that it was just a good time to do it. Their first catering event was for a friend’s wedding and things took off from there.
“I kind of always knew I wanted to be in the industry,” Angie explained to County 10.
She said she was “born” into it since her parents were restaurateurs. Angie worked for them growing up and moved on to other restaurants. After graduating from university, she made catering and hospitality her career.
She began formally studying wine in 2014, and has passed the required exams which include written, blind taste and service to become a certified level two sommelier in the Court of Master Sommelier program.
Joe has also been in the restaurant business his entire life, noting that it’s the only thing he’s ever done. His spark to become a chef began in 2008 when he worked at a fine restaurant in a ski resort in his hometown. The chief took him under his wing and taught him a lot. In 2010, he attended Culinary School in Pittsburgh.
“It kind of took off for me when I got out of culinary school,” he said.
His internship out of culinary school was in a restaurant that produced its own food on a farm of several hundred acres. From there he was the executive chef of various food establishments in Philadelphia and eventually met Angie while working at one of them.
The two moved to Lander in the spring of 2019 when Joe took on the role of Executive Chef at Mulino. It wasn’t Angie’s first time in Lander, she lived here about seven years ago.
They are both excited to have their dream of owning their own bespoke catering business and providing this service to the community.
