How to Throw a Platinum Jubilee Party Fit for a Royal

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is just around the corner, and you know what that means? A set of *four* days of celebration of 70 years of Her Majesty’s reign over the bank holiday. Of course, this incredible milestone is a unique moment in British history, so it’s no surprise that the whole country is pulling out all the stops to congratulate Queen Elizabeth II on her remarkable achievement. In fact, the official Platinum Jubilee website has already reported 2,429 public events and 2,579 street parties or private events have been shared so far.

So, with all these festivities taking place, there is no denying that there will be some serious competition to throw the ultimate Jubilee party. But don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered. With some tips from the pros at Laura Ashley, here’s your one-stop guide to throwing the celebration of the century.

Let’s talk decor

This is probably the most important part because you want your party to represent the occasion, right? Laura Ashley’s Head of Design, Helen Ashmore, has provided some tips for hosting the perfect tea party in the garden – which, as we all know, the Queen adores. In the past, she hosted more than 30,000 guests at the palace for annual summer garden parties.

When it comes to setting the mood, “get creative using natural shelving and hooks you may have in your outdoor space by draping string lights and lanterns over any tree, bush or shed! At sunset, the different lights will create an ambient atmosphere to keep the party going!”

She also notes the importance of a cozy corner. We’re in the UK after all, so we can’t always guarantee a warm summer evening! “Throws are essential for chic comfort and keeping guests warm. When not in use, drape them over chairs to create texture.”

Food fit for a queen

Food is another non-negotiable part. You’re going to want to do it all here – themed cakes, cucumber sandwiches, and of course plenty picky pieces. (We’re talking mini quiches, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, vol-au-vents, etc.) This is classic British garden party fare.

When it comes to cakes, a classic Victoria sponge is your best bet. It’s a quintessentially British treat, and Queen Elizabeth is a fan of it. Helen even suggests making the Victoria Sponge the star of the show by “presenting it on a flowery cake stand.” Take it a step further and decorate your cake with dried flowers in pastel hues to match your cake stand.” When ready to serve, cut the cake into finger slices. Apparently, that’s how Her Majesty likes it.

A royal drink

You literally can’t have a party without drinks, and you’ll want to give your guests the full royal experience. “Serve Pimm’s from vintage floral print teapots,” says Helen. Or, you can invest in a fancy pitcher to liven things up.

And if your guests aren’t Pimm’s drinkers, what could be more summery than glasses of Aperol? Nothing, what is it.

Plus, if you’ve run out of ideas on what drinks to serve, we even have a handy list of the best cocktails for spring, all delicious and fairly simple to make.

It’s simple – The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has an official Platinum Jubilee Celebration playlist on Spotify. It features artists like Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran and Elton John (all of whom have performed at previous Jubilee gigs), with a few other party tunes thrown in for good measure. We’re talking about Grace Jones, Phil Collins, Queen and obviously the Spice Girls.

And what’s a party without some karaoke? After a few of those cocktails, we’re pretty sure Grandma and Grandpa will be front and center playing their rendition of “Stayin’ Alive.” by the Bee Gees.

A royal impostor

Whether you’re in costume or prefer to do your own thing, it wouldn’t be a Jubilee party without dressing up! If you plan to incorporate the Union Jack theme into all aspects of your event, why not coordinate the colors of your outfit with the colors of the flag? Or if you’re having a fancy dress party, why not ask your guests to dress up as their favorite British icon or landmark? There are plenty of hilarious Big Ben outfits on the internet, and we’re pretty sure everyone’s been waiting for an excuse to wear *that* Geri Halliwell dress.

Or, if you want to skip all the sartorial camaraderie and just be yourself, stores like H&M and Urban Outfitters have great pieces for every taste.

We’ll see you there!
