Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Caretaker Convention Extraordinary Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni, may oversee the party’s national convention on March 26.

The punch learned on Sunday that the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), had ordered Buni to lead the party convention on the strict condition that no further postponement would be tolerated.

Impeccable sources have confirmed this to The punch on Sunday, adding that the decision was made by Buhari in London after a meeting with his most trusted allies, including Federation Attorney General Abubakar Malami, who advises the president on legal matters.

It was learned on Sunday that with the president making it clear he has no preferred candidate for president, the APC leadership race has been opened, adding to uncertainty over the zoning formula. published by the party last week. .

Also at the London meeting, it was learned that the President had denied ever sanctioning the removal of Buni and the appointment of Niger State Governor Abubakar Bello as his replacement, contrary to the claims of the Governor of Niger. Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.

The punch also learned that following the president’s warning on Saturday, most of the governors calling for Buni’s removal had decided to sheathe their swords.

Adamu could lose as party opens fight for president’s seat

A leader of the APC, who spoke to The punch on strict condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said Buhari had made it clear that he had not endorsed anyone as party chairman contrary to reports that he had endorsed former Governor Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa State.

“Buhari explained that he does not support any presidential candidate and everyone is free to challenge. The President is tired of all these problems. He thinks anyone who wishes to participate should feel free to do so and should test their popularity on the pitch if it brings peace to the APC,” the source said.

“The president also ordered Buni to resume his duties as president as soon as possible, adding that he would not accept any more excuses. He said that the convention date of March 26 remains sacrosanct.

The Niger state governor had taken over as the party’s interim president last Monday amid rumors that Buhari ordered Buni’s dismissal.

Amid the controversy, some governors, including El-Rufai and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, openly condemned Buni.

While El-Rufai accused Buni of colluding with some fifth columnists to obtain a court order that would defeat the convention, Akeredolu described the governors supporting Buni as (fraudulent) Yahoo Yahoo governors.

However, it has been learned that the Governor of Niger State will hand over power to Buni this week after the President intervened and the Independent National Electoral Commission refused to recognize his authority.

“INEC does not recognize Bello as president. This challenge means that he will not be able to manage the agreement and sign the relevant documents. He will have to pass the baton to Buni so as not to jeopardize the success of the convention,” said an APC leader.

However, it has been learned that new measures are being taken to ensure that former governor Tanko Al-Makura; or a former national vice-president of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, Turaki Salihu Mustapha, becomes the president of the APC.

“Buhari is someone who rewards loyalty and goodwill. He gave two former judges ambassadorial appointments to stand in his corner. Mustapha and Al-Makura were with him in the CCP trenches. These are not people the president is going to abandon without at least consulting them. There will be many developments in the days to come. We don’t know what will happen to the zoning formula that was last released following the president’s insistence that he won’t arrest any aspirants.

When contacted, a spokesman for the president, Garba Shehu, said he was unaware of party affairs. “I don’t know of anything,” he said.

We won’t quit, say Al-Makura, Mustapha

Meanwhile, Al-Makura has vowed not to step down from the party’s presidential race.

Al-Makura, speaking to reporters in Abuja on Sunday, said the report that Buhari had endorsed a candidate was speculation.

“The sources of information were not authentic. They weren’t genuine. And I know what Mr. President stands for. He always stands for what is fair and due process. And unless I have an authoritative source of information that is clear. I still have my doubts. I have many avenues through which I can reach Mr. President and the people around him.

“And since that speculation didn’t come through those channels, I consider it speculation. That’s why, as I speak to you, my campaign is happening at a different pace, to make sure my campaign is happening far to wait for the next line of action as directed by the party leadership.

Also in chat with The punchTuraki Mustapha Salihu, said he would not resign, adding that it was not true that Buhari endorsed anyone.

“I am 100% in the race. As long as we, the aspirants and the party are standing today, no official communication exists for us to resign or run. For my part, I am 100 % in the race and I hope that as a neutral candidate among the competitors, if a consensus is reached, I hope that I will be approved, ”he said.

“An aide to Buni, Yusuf Ali, when contacted asked, @who else will conduct the elections if not him (Buni)? With INEC’s insistence on recognizing only Mai Mala Buni as authentic president of the APC, we have been justified.
